According to 2019-20 National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5) India was having about 6.3 Cr. Of disabled population, which was 4.52% of total population. Out of 6.3 Cr, 44.7% ie. 2.8-3 Cr are with locomotor disabilities. On an average18 to 20 lakh new locomotor disabled persons per year get added in India.
In India vehicular accidents, diabetes, and vascular diseases are increasing amputation rates, particularly affecting rural & urban low-income, and working-age populations. India is number one in road accidents and also ranks 2nd in number of Diabetes patients.
Despite the need, very few of those requiring an artificial limb actually receive one due to cost and access barriers, leaving most without adequate mobility support.
Swadhar is a dedicated social welfare initiative of BVP South Pune Charitable Trust focused on supporting physically challenged individuals through rehabilitation and mobility assistance. The program aims to restore independence, dignity, and confidence by providing artificial limbs and ongoing support to eligible beneficiaries.
Swadhar works with a people-centric approach, ensuring that each individual receives appropriate assessment, guidance, and follow-up care. Through collaboration with medical professionals, technical experts, and volunteers, the program strives to create meaningful and long-term impact in the lives of those it serves.
